Hybrid Battery Replacement
Hybrid and Electric vehicle owners tend to love their cars, especially the fuel economy. But the prospect of Hybrid battery replacement can be worrisome. The good news is, with the right replacement battery you can not only add many years of life to your vehicle, you can actually improve its power and performance, thanks to advancements in battery technology.
For all of the benefits of hybrid or electric vehicles, they do come with some drawbacks – specifically when it comes to the loss of their battery power and capacity over time. With this new technology, hybrid battery replacement is needed. This is a natural and inherent characteristic of batteries found in Hybrid and Electric vehicles. It’s not a matter of IF the battery’s performance will decrease, but WHEN.
Is your Hybrid Battery not working or not performing how it should be? At AL and Son’s Automotive, we can help you with any problems with your hybrid vehicle including assessing and replacing your battery. Hybrid batteries have a typical lifespan of 150,000-200,000 miles, but it isn’t unusual for some to last a lot longer. How do you know if your Hybrid battery is beginning to fail? If your engine runs almost constantly, even with light acceleration, or if your fuel economy decreases significantly, it is probably time to replace your battery. Hybrid battery replacement is an involved process, and should be left to a professional.
How do I know if my Hybrid battery needs replacing?
If you notice your IMA light on (Integrated Motor Assist), especially if the check engine light is also on, that is a strong indication that your hybrid battery needs replacing, although this is not necessarily the case.
To know for sure you will need your “P-codes” (engine diagnostic or “fault” codes) read from the on-board computer.
P1447, P1449 or P1433 error codes generally mean your battery has 10% or less of it’s original capacity remaining. Since the Hybrid battery deteriorates slowly over time, it can be difficult to identify the gradual loss in performance. Other than the IMA light, you may notice strange behavior with your IMA system, such as your battery gauge suddenly going to empty or full, or your hybrid system fails completely but the car runs fine otherwise.
